CLINICIANS

ED EVARD, PMHNP-BC

Mr. Evard is a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner licensed in the state of Virginia.  He began his career in the medical field by enlisting and serving in the US Army as a combat medic.  Having spent a year in Afghanistan providing close medical support to an infantry battalion, he understands the stressors our active duty service members and veterans face and finds working with this population particularly rewarding.  While in Afghanistan, he also started a program training Afghan locals in the basics of emergency and primary care medicine so that they could grow to serve their communities.  Mr. Evard applies this same energy to his psychiatric practice, where his goal is to equip clients with the knowledge and care to function at their best, becoming sources of positive change in their own communities.

After honorably discharging from the US Army and having come from a family of nurses, Mr. Evard elected to pursue a nursing career himself, the initial stage of which was spent in the Sentara Heart Hospital Cardiac ICU.  This experience grounded Mr. Evard and he continues to welcome the opportunity to work with medically complex clients that need a provider who understands the ways mental health is impacted by other conditions, to include cardio-metabolic disease, endocrine disorders, and pain.

Mr. Evard has spent eight years working in inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient mental health settings.  He has the expertise and experience to help clients suffering from the full spectrum of mental health disorders and symptoms.  He utilizes a wide range of treatment modalities to assist clients in achieving their goals, to include medication, lifestyle interventions, and brief therapy.  Consistent with his personalized approach to client care, he offers pharmacogenetic testing to identify the medications most likely to benefit clients.  Mr. Evard is also trained in the utilization of Spravato (intranasal esketamine), a fast-acting and cutting-edge treatment for severe and resistant forms of depression.  He is particularly skilled in helping clients with treatment resistant bipolar disorder, depression, attention-deficit disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

TYLER PERKINS, PA-C

Tyler is a graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School and a member of the Pi Alpha Honor Society. His journey into medicine has been driven by a profound fascination with the complexities of the human mind. During his education, he found his passion for psychiatry and behavioral health, which led him to seek out additional experiences in the field. He has experience in a variety of psychiatry settings, including outpatient, inpatient, mental crisis management, and addiction medicine. He is committed to delivering high-quality patient care, focusing on empathy, integrity, and evidence-based medicine. He is determined to advance the field through research, advocacy, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals and to discover better, more innovative ways to treat patients who suffer from mental health disorders. He believes in a holistic approach to health and that mental health is at the core of a person’s overall well-being. If we can ensure a healthy mind, we can live our most optimal lives in the best overall health. In this, he wants patients to function to the best of their abilities in mind, body, and spirit. Empathy and compassion lie at the core of his practice philosophy, as he actively listens to patients, acknowledges their concerns, and involves them in decision-making regarding their health to create a working relationship to achieve their best health and make a meaningful difference in their lives.

Originally from the Central Coast of California, Tyler moved to the Hampton Roads area with his wife and fell in love with the area and the community. He is eager to give back to the community where he has felt so welcomed. Tyler enjoys all things outdoors in his free time, including hiking, fishing, archery, and gardening. He is also quite a culinary enthusiast, including both cooking and eating. Above all, he enjoys spending time with his family.

JOLEEN KIM, LCSW

If you are struggling with stress or depression, I can help. Hi, I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I am licensed in Virginia, Utah, and Nevada. I feel that therapy is a gift you give yourself. I enjoy meeting you where you are and helping you get through the rough spots, whether it's finding your voice, identifying the obstacle and need for change, or just understanding from a different perspective. I work mainly with clients who have experience with anxiety, depression, and trauma in their life.

In our first session we will have a brief introduction, then I will gather information about you that will help me understand your purpose for coming to therapy. In this first session we will determine the obstacle in your path and gather a little personal history. This will help me create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions.

I chose to work in mental health after experiencing the need of understanding mental health within my own family. I am a mother of four grown children and grandmother of six. I've had the opportunity to experience different cultures as I lived in South Korea and traveled throughout the world. I have close ties with the hearing-impaired community, as my husband lost his hearing at age three. I have been able to view life from different perspectives over time which I believe adds insight and understanding to the value of each life!

AMELIA MARKERT SHAW, LCSW

I am licensed in Virginia with extensive experience in providing therapy to help people maneuver through life challenges, such as difficult decisions, tension from work or relationship stress, sudden major life changes, issues related to mental health treatment and so on…. I find connecting with each person just where they are at the time allows the process to unfold. New perspectives will reveal opportunities to grow and manage the ups and downs encountered in everyday living. If you are reading this, perhaps you have thought about counseling before, or maybe put it off, wondering if therapy could help when going through a hard time. There is the stigma related to therapy and labels like “crazy” if our mental wellness is not in shape. This is an opportunity to get to know yourself on a new level, to explore things yet considered, acknowledge feelings that have been avoided, and in the process gain a new understanding and perspective about ourselves and paths in life. While time is hard to come by and there can be limitations due to technology, there are no limits to seeking solutions. This may result in learning new ways to manage stress, understand yourself better, recognize how your thinking affects your reactions and emotions. I am very approachable, understanding, and eager to connect with you to work out a plan that will lead to specific intent for change, growth and success. Taking the first step to seeking a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage, so congrats already! I am here to support you along the way wherever you are on this journey…
